Some information about the ICBL:
Over 90 countries are affected with land mines. A handful of these countries suffer solely from the legacy of the explosive remnants of war dating back to conflicts in the first half of the last century. The enduring threat of landmines in these countries still puts the civilian and animal population at risk.
The 1997 treaty banning the use, production, stockpiling, and transfer of antipersonnel landmines has been ratified by 129 countries and signed by 145 . Since the treaty became law, countries may no longer sign it, they must accede. Those countries which have already signed, must still ratify in order to be fully bound by the ban provisions.
The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL - www.icbl.org) brings together over 1,300 humanitarian, peace, disability, veterans, medical, development and other groups of all kinds in over 80 countries who work locally, nationally, regionally, and internationally to ban antipersonnel (AP) landmines.
The ICBL calls for:
- An international ban on the use, production, stockpiling, and sale, transfer, or export of antipersonnel landmines
- The signing, ratification, implementation, and monitoring of the mine ban treaty
- Increased resources for humanitarian demining and mine awareness programs
- Increased resources for landmine victim rehabilitation and assistance
